Global Naga Forum (GNF) has called on the Governor and Chief Minister of Manipur to act with fairness, restraint and due process in the FIR filed against Naga educator, musician and rights activist Ambrose D. Kamei, who was reportedly targeted for his social media statements.
In its appeal, GNF convenor Chuba Ozukum and general secretary Lakpachui Siro clarified that the forum does not question the state’s duty to maintain public order or to act against genuine legal violations. They argued that public expressions, especially on social media, must be viewed within the constitutional framework of freedom of speech and that the context in which they were made should be considered.
The forum expressed concern that Kamei, a well‑known educator and musician who has publicly addressed Naga rights and welfare, was singled out for criminal proceedings while similar or more inflammatory remarks from other individuals had gone unpunished. GNF warned that selective action could signal discrimination, deepen mistrust amid Manipur’s ongoing ethnic tensions, and undermine confidence‑building efforts.
GNF urged the Governor and Chief Minister to personally review the FIR, assess its proportionality and consistency with constitutional principles, and determine whether criminal proceedings are necessary. The forum called for a fair and equitable resolution that would avoid alienation and support dialogue and reconciliation at a time when it is urgently needed.
