On September 9, the North Eastern Students’ Organisation (NESO) condemned the killing of 54‑year‑old Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh in Southeast Delhi and called for a swift, impartial investigation.
Singh was beaten to death by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff after he objected to their shouting and drinking outside his Kilokari village apartment early Monday. NESO chairman Samuel B Jyrwa said the incident was deeply disturbing and demanded that all those responsible be brought to justice.
Jyrwa linked the killing to the ongoing harassment of Northeastern people in mainland India, citing reports of racial slurs, verbal abuse, physical attacks and discrimination. He warned that the crime could not be viewed in isolation from the broader pattern of intimidation and violence faced by people from the Northeast.
The organisation demanded a transparent investigation, exemplary punishment for those found responsible, and urged authorities to address the wider problem of discrimination through preventive measures, stronger law enforcement, police sensitisation and mechanisms to ensure safety and dignity. NESO expressed solidarity with Singh’s family and the Manipur community, demanding justice for the victim and accountability for all perpetrators.
