Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, spoke at a memorial meeting held at the Ambedkar International Centre on Thursday, September 10, 2026, pledging to secure justice for Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh.
The 54‑year‑old musician was beaten to death outside his apartment in Kilokari village after he confronted a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff who were shouting and drinking. Police have arrested seven adults and detained a minor in connection with the killing.
Gandhi said that the murder was not an isolated incident and that it has become “a fashion” for powerful people to act violently and arrogantly. He added that such violence is repeated and must be stopped.
He described the event as a tragedy on many levels, noting that a talented individual was killed because of his background and that families in Manipur are already enduring repeated losses. The opposition leader praised Singh’s wife for standing up for the values she believes in.
Gandhi concluded that violence should not be met with more violence, that symbols matter, and that Singh’s legacy of love and affection will be honored. He affirmed that the government would not be cowed and would pursue justice for the slain musician.
