Karnataka Police will arrest former JD(S) Member of Parliament Prajwal Revanna for questioning over the alleged use of a mobile phone inside Bengaluru Central Prison, authorities said on September 8.
Revanna, who is serving a life sentence for a rape conviction, is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, the son of JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna and the nephew of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. He and another inmate, identified only as Pratap, were taken to the Special Court for MPs and MLAs in Bengaluru and presented before a judge.
The investigation began after an Android phone, a pen drive and a charger were recovered from Revanna’s cell. A video surfaced showing Revanna speaking on the phone from his VIP cell and reportedly using various prison facilities. The police registered an FIR and are probing a breach of prison security. Pratap is named as accused number one and Revanna as accused number two.
Preliminary work revealed that the phone carried an Andhra Pradesh‑registered SIM card. Revanna told investigators that the phone belonged to Pratap, who shared the cell. A diary recovered from the cell contained contact numbers of Revanna’s family and relatives, and calls were reportedly made to some of them using the seized device. Police will question the pair about how the SIM card and phone were obtained, how they entered the prison, and whether any staff or outsiders assisted in the breach of security.
