Kerala Govt Holds Emergency Meeting to Improve Road Safety

The Kerala state government convened an emergency meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday to address a series of fatal road accidents that have occurred in recent days. The assembly brought together the Director General of Police, the Transport Commissioner, the National Highways Authority of India state head, the National Transportation Planning & Research Centre, officials from the Kerala Road Safety Authority, and district collectors.

Public Works Minister P.K. Basheer chaired the session, which focused on a detailed review of accident causes on major roads and national highways. Participants discussed emergency measures aimed at strengthening road safety, reducing crashes, improving traffic control, and maintaining road infrastructure. The agenda also covered steps to enforce safety protocols more rigorously.

The meeting underscored the need for tighter coordination among departments and issued directives for the strict implementation of road‑safety measures. It was scheduled to take place at the Legislative Assembly Complex at 11 a.m.

In Alappuzha, District Collector Shaji V. Nair led a separate meeting to launch inspections of the district’s national highway network. Three task‑force teams began work at 9 a.m., covering Aroor to the south, Thottapally to the north, and Ochira to the north. The teams will conduct weekly inspections to monitor progress.

A special session at the Collectorate reviewed security arrangements, with task forces mandated to remove illegal parking, encroachments, and barricades as directed by the Supreme Court. A monthly meeting will evaluate the status of these initiatives and ensure continued improvement of road safety across the state.
