A shooting was reported at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, prompting an immediate evacuation of the building. The August County Sheriff’s Office said the incident is now contained and secured.
Virginia State Police spokeswoman Robin Lawson told ABC News that one adult was injured in the gunfire. Waynesboro Public Schools posted that police have a large presence around the campus. The event occurred just weeks after the school’s first day back from summer break.
Students were escorted to Westminster Presbyterian Church for reunification while authorities ensured the safety of the children. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the children are safe and asked the public to avoid traveling to the school to keep emergency routes clear.
Governor Abigail Spanberger said she is monitoring the emergency and expressed sympathy for students, families, and staff in a post on X, thanking first responders. Waynesboro city council member Jim Wood described the episode as an isolated, one‑on‑one incident, noted that the shooter no longer poses a threat, and confirmed the injured adult was taken to a hospital with non‑life‑threatening injuries.
