Teen girl who recorded mosque shooting livestream charged with murder, DA says

A 17-year-old girl has been charged with murder by aiding and abetting for her role in a livestream of a shooting that killed three people at a San Diego mosque. Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill announced that a grand jury indicted her on three counts of murder and one count of conspiracy after her arrest last week. In North Carolina, aiding‑and‑abetting carries the same penalty as committing the crime directly.

According to an indictment reviewed by the Associated Press, the teenager agreed before the attack to record the livestream, distribute the video, and release a document written by the shooters. She also purchased a patch featuring a white‑supremacist symbol and sent it to one of the gunmen for use during the attack. O’Neill described her as the individual who recorded, disseminated the footage, and published the manifesto.

The attack on the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18 left three victims dead: Amin Abdullah, a security guard who delayed the gunmen; Mansour Kaziha and Nadir Awad, who attempted to lure the shooters away from the mosque. Police chief Scott Wahl said Abdullah’s actions prevented the attackers from reaching an area where up to 140 children were present. Mosque director Taha Hassane credited Abdullah with limiting the carnage.

The shooters, identified as 17‑year‑old Cain Clark and 18‑year‑old Caleb Vazquez, left behind writings that referenced far‑right extremist influences and expressed hatred toward Jews, Muslims, LGBTQ+ people, Black individuals, women, and political groups. Vazquez’s family later disclosed that he was on the autism spectrum and struggled with mental‑health issues, which they believe, along with online hate, contributed to his radicalization.
