A statewide drive in Maharashtra to check the working knowledge of Marathi among autorickshaw and taxi drivers has resulted in 331 notices being issued to drivers across the state. The drive, which began on August 20, saw regional transport offices (RTOs) issue notices to 139 drivers in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and 192 in other parts of the state on Monday alone. According to officials, RTO officers checked a total of 1,392 drivers in the MMR on Monday, while 3,415 autorickshaw and taxi drivers were checked in other parts of the state.
The statewide drive has so far seen 35,190 vehicles checked, including 14,399 in the MMR, over the last five days, resulting in 4,729 notices being issued statewide, including 2,239 in the MMR. The drive is part of the state government’s efforts to enforce the Marathi language requirement for commercial passenger vehicle drivers. The government had announced a month-long drive to check the working knowledge of Marathi among autorickshaw and taxi drivers.
