Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached out to the family of Head Constable Ashiq Hussain Qureshi, who was killed in a terror attack in Anantnag on July 22. Qureshi, a resident of Budgam in Central Kashmir, was posted with the Indian Reserve Police and was on Amarnath Yatra duty when the incident occurred.
According to the J&K Police, a militant fired at Qureshi from point-blank range near Lalchowk in Anantnag, South Kashmir. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation, with several leaders visiting the family to offer condolences. BJP’s Sunil Sharma, Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Assembly, visited the family on Friday and facilitated a call between Qureshi’s son Absar and the Home Minister, during which Shah offered his condolences to the family.
J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also met the family members of Head Constable Qureshi in Beerwah, paying tribute to the policeman and conveying his condolences to the bereaved family. He praised Qureshi’s bravery, saying that his courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty will remain etched in the collective memory of the nation.
Sinha assured the family that the administration stands firmly with them and will ensure their well-being and dignity. He also promised full support to the family until Qureshi’s son finishes his studies and becomes eligible for a compassionate government appointment.
The police are still searching for the militant involved in the attack, detaining over 2500 locals across the valley in the process. Qureshi’s death is the first such incident since the Pahalgam attack in April 2025.
