After the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced South African human rights lawyer Navi Pillay as the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, former President Donald Trump posted a lengthy rant on Truth Social. He claimed Pillay should have received the award for her work in settling eight wars and dismissed the decision as an “indelible stain” on Norway.
Trump questioned Pillay’s qualifications, accusing her of hating Israel and listed his own diplomatic successes, including settling eight wars, ending two more, securing the release of Israeli hostages, winning a war in Venezuela, capturing its dictator, and preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He argued that these achievements made him deserving of the prize.
Pillay is a prominent jurist who has spent decades working on human rights and international justice, defending Nelson Mandela and holding senior United Nations positions. At a Nuremberg court conference, she joked that if applause increased she might share her prize with Trump, a remark that may have provoked his reaction.
Trump also criticized the Nobel Committee during a rally in Syracuse, New York, and on Truth Social, labeling the decision a stain on Norway and accusing the committee of being “radical ideologues” who discredit the Peace Prize. He cited support from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado as evidence of his merit, noting that the prize itself is not transferred when a recipient gives away a medal.
