A Delhi court has granted bail to Kashmiri human rights activist Khurram Parvez in a terror case, officials confirmed on Saturday. This development comes after the Delhi High Court granted him bail in another Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) case on June 10.
The second case, a terror conspiracy case, was lodged by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) four and a half years after Parvez’s arrest. Following the Delhi High Court’s decision, Parvez had only one pending case against him, for which he remained in jail. However, with the Sessions Judge Pitamber Dutt of Patiala House Court granting him bail in this case as well, the path has been cleared for his release. A detailed order is awaited.
The Delhi High Court had previously observed that Parvez’s prolonged detention, coupled with the slow pace of the trial and his disability, justified his release. This decision was made despite the stringent bail restrictions under the UAPA. Parvez was formally arrested in the second NIA case in 2023, while already in custody.
The grant of bail in both cases marks a significant development in Parvez’s ongoing legal battles. Further details are expected to emerge as the detailed order is made available.
