The United States Department of Justice has indicted Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gang leader, for his alleged involvement in several high-profile attacks, including the murder of Sidhu Moose Wala, a prominent Indian singer and rapper. According to the indictment, Bishnoi’s gang was responsible for ordering and directing Moose Wala’s murder on May 29, 2022, in Mansa, Punjab.
The indictment also mentions that Bishnoi’s gang claimed responsibility for the attack through an interview with a media outlet. Additionally, the gang has been linked to threats issued to Punjabi actor and singer Gippy Grewal, as well as the shooting at the residence of actor Salman Khan. The US DoJ says that these acts of violence were committed to target prominent cultural, political, and business leaders in India and diaspora communities outside of India.
The indictment further states that between 2022 and 2026, Bishnoi announced his intention to murder Salman Khan on multiple occasions. This is likely due to the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, which has led to continuous threats against the actor. The gang has also been involved in extorting members of the public based on fear of the Bishnoi OCG.
On November 25, 2023, Bishnoi claimed responsibility for a shooting that occurred at the residence of Gippy Grewal in Vancouver, Canada. The shooting was followed by an online post on Facebook, warning that
