On Monday, a vehicle rollover during a training exercise at Mount Bundey Training Area near Darwin killed 28‑year‑old soldier Brendan Hannam and injured five others. The crash involved a Supacat high‑mobility transporter. The incident took place about 100 km southeast of Darwin.
Chief of the Army Lt Gen Susan Coyle confirmed that two of the injured remain in hospital in a stable condition in Darwin while the remaining three are in Robertson Barracks. She described Hannam as a junior non‑commissioned officer of the 5/7 Battalion, a respected leader who had served in Afghanistan and trained Ukrainians in the UK. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro also issued condolences, emphasizing the risks faced by service members.
The incident follows a series of high‑profile training accidents, including the 2024 parachute incident that killed Jack Fitzgibbon and the 2023 mid‑air collision that killed Lachlan Muddle. Investigations into those deaths led to inquiries by Comcare, a NSW coronial inquiry and an internal defence probe, and recommendations that the Defence Force has since acted upon.
The Northern Territory Police Commissioner Martin Dole said officers were dispatched to assist and are helping the coroner’s investigation. The Defence Force is supporting the families and promising privacy for the soldiers involved. The event underscores ongoing concerns about safety during live‑fire exercises.
