A third‑baseman for the Oakland Athletics, Zack Gelof, has filed a lawsuit against the Detroit Tigers after sustaining an injury during a game at Comerica Park on July 9, 2026.
According to the complaint, Gelof was attempting to catch a fly ball in the third inning when he slid toward the right‑hand side wall. He claims his right knee “violently struck an exposed dangerous metal fence” that protruded into the playing area, ripping his uniform and producing a deep laceration beneath his kneecap. The injury forced him to leave the game and caused him to miss roughly 30 days of work and games.
Gelof’s attorneys allege that the metal fencing was sharp, exposed, and inadequately padded, and that there was insufficient space between the fence and the field. They argue the Tigers failed to repair, redesign, or relocate the fence, and did not warn players of the hazard. The lawsuit contends that the organization knew or should have known a player could collide with the structure.
The suit was filed in the Wayne County Circuit Court on September 28 and seeks damages for pain and suffering, lost wages, economic loss, mental distress, medical bills, attorney fees and other losses. In a statement, the Tigers said they were aware of the lawsuit but declined to comment on pending litigation.
