Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson announced his resignation after the left‑leaning opposition secured a narrow majority in the parliamentary election.
The Swedish Election Authority reported that the four opposition parties captured 176 of the 349 seats in the Riksdag, while the coalition that supported the outgoing government won 173 seats.
After the final results were released, Kristersson posted a letter on X to the speaker of parliament, stating that he would step down to allow the speaker to begin the process of forming a new government.
The Social Democrats, led by former Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson, emerged as the largest single party with 99 seats, though they lost eight seats from 2022. Andersson will need to reconcile divisions within the left‑leaning bloc, as the Centre Party refuses to cooperate with the Sweden Democrats and the Left Party, complicating coalition negotiations. The Sweden Democrats, which had hoped for cabinet positions, finished third with 62 seats, 11 fewer than four years ago.
