During a daytime Russian drone attack on Thursday, explosions were heard near the Poland‑Ukraine border. Sirens sounded in eastern Poland, military aircraft were scrambled, and flights were temporarily suspended at Rzeszow and Lublin airports. Polish authorities said the strikes came close to the NATO member’s border but did not breach Polish airspace.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk told a press conference that a massive attack had just ended in western Ukraine, likely hitting a petrol station. He added that Polish aircraft were scrambled. The Polish army confirmed that no violation of its airspace had been recorded and that the aircraft had finished their operations. The airports reopened after the brief closure.
In a separate incident, Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in the Russian city of Yaroslavl. President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on X that the attack was carried out in a joint operation by Ukraine’s Security Service, Unmanned Systems Forces, Defense Intelligence and Foreign Intelligence Service. Russian officials reported a fire at an industrial site in Krasnodar after drone debris fell on it, and a Russian missile and drone barrage injured at least 19 people in Ukraine, including children.
The attacks come as Russia holds its first parliamentary elections since the full‑scale invasion of Ukraine, amid declining approval ratings for Vladimir Putin and limited territorial gains. Meanwhile, the United States House of Representatives passed a sanctions and tariff bill that could impose up to 100 % tariffs on nations importing Russian oil, a measure that has prompted India to reaffirm its commitment to energy security.
