The Communist Party of India (CPI) welcomed the BRICS declaration issued on Sunday, calling for reforms to the global governance system and urging the bloc to lead a shift toward a more representative, democratic and equitable international order.

CPI general secretary D Raja highlighted the declaration’s emphasis on greater representation of the Global South in the United Nations, including reforms to the UN Security Council, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. He said that the inclusion of India and other developing nations in decision‑making structures must be pursued with greater urgency.

Raja also noted progress in India‑China relations that emerged on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, reinforcing the CPI’s long‑standing position that disputes between the two neighbours should be resolved through dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful negotiations.

The party praised BRICS’ unequivocal concern over continued violence in West Asia, the call for restraint, dialogue and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and support for full UN membership for Palestine. Raja stressed that the international community must address the concentration of power in the hands of a few countries and called for institutional checks on the unilateral exercise of power by imperialist states. He emphasized that the move toward greater use of local currencies in trade should be part of a broader de‑dollarisation agenda aimed at reducing vulnerabilities and providing a meaningful counterbalance to U.S. financial hegemony.

Finally, the CPI urged that commitments on climate change, sustainable development, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies move beyond declarations to concrete cooperation, ensuring that technological and environmental progress benefits humanity as a whole rather than widening existing inequalities. The party called on the Global South to speak with greater unity and determination for a just, multipolar and equitable world order.
