President Donald Trump criticized Democratic opposition to a proposed $5,000 payment for every American adult, calling the effort a partisan block on his plan to reward voters for electing Republicans. In a Truth Social post, Trump described the payments as a “dividend” stemming from the country’s economic growth, not from borrowed money, and said that Democrats were hoping the program would never materialize.
The president’s proposal, announced at a GOP midterm convention in Texas, would cost more than $1.2 trillion, according to experts, adding to an already projected fiscal 2026 deficit of nearly $2 trillion. Trump insists he does not need congressional approval for the so‑called “Trump dividend,” but Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said the plan would require congressional action.
Johnson praised the idea as “creative” and “exciting,” noting that the details would need to be worked out. He also suggested that the payments were a way to keep Republicans in control, saying that voters would receive more money if the party stayed in power.
Trump compared Democrats’ opposition to the dividend with their block of a large spending package and a $1,776 payment to active duty service members. He vowed that the dividend would happen, urging voters to “Vote Republican – Make America Great Again.” The proposal remains controversial as polls show Democrats holding a lead in the generic congressional ballot.
