Farmers from the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) began a five‑day sit‑in outside the office of Punjab Cabinet Minister Ravjot Singh in Hoshiarpur on Monday, September 14, 2026. The protest is part of a larger campaign that also targets the residences and offices of several other ministers across the state.
The KMM has issued a 12‑point charter that calls for a complete loan waiver for farmers and farm workers, the withdrawal of criminal cases filed against participants in agitations, and the procurement of key crops such as basmati, maize, moong, mustard and potatoes at minimum support prices. The protest is organised in collaboration with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Doaba, the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (Piddi Group) and the Kisan Mazdoor Hitkari Sabha.
BKU Doaba state president Manjit Singh Rai warned that if the government refuses to hold talks, the groups will convene a meeting on September 16 to decide further actions, which could include blocking railway tracks and highways. Rai also highlighted unscheduled power cuts that are disrupting tube‑well irrigation during a critical period for standing crops, and criticised the state’s claims of a coal shortage that has allegedly affected both farmers and industry.
Beyond the immediate demands, the charter seeks a resolution in the Punjab Assembly against the Seed Act, 2025, the Cooperative Act, 2026, the VB‑G RAM G Act and the Electricity Amendment Bill, 2025. It also demands an immediate halt to prepaid electricity meters, withdrawal of the land‑pooling policy, and an end to forcible acquisition of farmland for Bharatmala projects, while calling for a policy to address floods, groundwater depletion and pollution.
