On Monday in Chandigarh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann commented that Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini’s frequent wearing of a turban would not win Punjabi hearts, calling the turban a “fake” and implying it was a gimmick.
Saini reacted sharply, demanding that Mann apologise for the remark. He explained that the turban is a symbol of respect for Sikh Gurus, a matter of faith and reverence, and that calling it “fake” insulted the people of Punjab.
Saini has often worn a turban at official functions in Haryana and during his visits to Punjab, which are set to go to polls next year. He has linked the turban to his emotions and used it to criticize the AAP government, citing economic progress in Haryana and questioning Punjab’s development.
At a Patiala event, Saini attacked the AAP on drug issues and claimed that Haryana, formed in 1966, has surpassed Punjab economically, presenting various figures to support his claim. He urged voters to demand tangible work on development, employment, industry security and solutions, rather than publicity and jokes.
Saini reiterated his confidence that the BJP will form the next Punjab government and that the state now needs concrete action. He cited his earlier statement on Guru Nanak Dev’s message while presenting Haryana’s 2026‑27 budget, emphasizing the importance of honest work, meditation on God’s name, and sharing with others.
