Yemen’s Houthi rebels announced on Sunday that they had struck facilities at a military base in Saudi Arabia, claiming the attack targeted weapons depots and command‑and‑control centers at the southern Sharurah base. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said a joint ballistic‑missile and drone strike hit the intended targets.
The claim comes as the Houthis have advanced rapidly to the Red Sea coast this week, giving them a stronger foothold to threaten Saudi shipping around the Bab‑al‑Mandeb strait. The group warned that further Saudi attacks on Yemen could trigger wider measures.
Oil prices hovered near $100 a barrel on Sunday, reflecting fears that the escalating conflict could draw the United States into a broader confrontation with Iran and extend the six‑month war to the east. Market analysts noted that any escalation could disrupt maritime traffic in the region and push benchmark Brent crude higher.
Separately, Iranian media reported that a crew member was killed early on Sunday when an Iranian commercial ship was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. No statement has yet been issued by the U.S. military, which has previously struck Iranian vessels to enforce its blockade of the country’s ports.
