The civil works for the Vattiyurkavu junction development project in Thiruvananthapuram are scheduled to start on Monday, September 14, 2026. Health Minister and local MLA K. Muraleedharan will inaugurate the construction near Maruthankuzhy, marking the beginning of a long‑awaited infrastructure upgrade for the area.
The Kerala Road Fund Board has awarded the contract to the Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS). The project will build roads, culverts, retaining walls, and relocate utility lines along a 10.8‑kilometre stretch that connects Sasthamangalam, Vattiyurkavu, Mannarakkonam, Peroorkada, Mukkola, and Vazhayila. The new road will be 18.5 metres wide, and demolition of most structures on acquired land has already been completed.
Initially estimated at ₹506.48 crore, the project’s cost was revised to ₹531.76 crore, with ₹458.94 crore earmarked for land acquisition. Funding of ₹385 crore from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) in the first phase has enabled compensation of up to ₹40 lakh for each cent. A shopping complex is also under construction to rehabilitate more than 500 traders who surrendered their shops and land for the development.
The project has been a point of contention during recent Assembly elections. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and former MLA V.K. Prasanth claimed credit for the land acquisition, while the United Democratic Front (UDF) and Mr. Muraleedharan highlighted a decade‑long delay. The project’s inauguration will underscore the administration’s commitment to completing the long‑standing demand of the Vattiyurkavu community and surrounding regions.
