Two college friends, both 24, were fatally struck by a New York City subway train at the Spring Street station in downtown Manhattan just after 3 a.m. Sunday. Reports indicate the pair were sitting on the tracks and did not appear to realize the approaching train.
The male friend was on the tracks when his female companion tried to pull him toward her before the No. 4 train hit them. It is unclear whether he fell onto the tracks or was already on them. A video circulated online shows the pair seated on the tracks moments before impact.
The train operator applied the emergency brake but could not stop in time. Emergency services found the pair beneath the train and pronounced them dead on scene. Approximately 100 passengers were evacuated. The operator reported seeing a man and woman sitting on the track, noting that the woman was laughing and pulling the man toward her.
Investigators are examining whether intoxication contributed to the incident and whether suicide was a motive, though no notes were found. Both students had graduated from Rutgers University in 2024. Mental‑health resources are provided for those in distress.
