Comedian Bill Maher mocked President Donald Trump’s unusual version of the Pledge of Allegiance during the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Thursday. The host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher appeared taken aback by the moment and addressed the studio audience on Friday night.
Maher said, “This really happened this week in America, which used to be a real country. At the convention, he made everybody put their hand up and do a new pledge of allegiance.” He then read aloud the words Trump had instructed supporters to repeat, ending with a remark that the host threw his hands in the air and said, “I got nothing anymore.”
Later that evening, Trump followed the pledge with a warning to supporters, telling them, “You know what happens if you don’t vote? You go to hell, you know that? Okay? You go to hell, and I don’t want that to happen to you.”
Maher has a long record of criticizing Trump on television, from jokes about the former president’s false claim that Barack Obama was born outside the United States to accusations that Trump embraces socialism and staging “gladiatorial games.” Trump has repeatedly attacked Maher, calling him “highly overrated” and accusing him of having a “terminal case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
