A 60‑year‑old man from Redding, California, died after leaping into Lake Shasta in an attempt to rescue a dog that had jumped off a moving boat. The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office responded at about 9:12 a.m. on September 11, 2026, following a call about a possible drowning near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch.
Deputies identified the man as Geordan White. While aboard a vessel, a dog leapt into the lake. White entered the water to retrieve the animal, but an unknown emergency caused him to call for help. A passenger on the boat threw him a flotation device, which he initially caught, but he later released it, slipped, and did not resurface.
White’s body was located by the sheriff’s office dive team, Cal Fire, and the U.S. Forest Service later that afternoon. The dog was rescued successfully. A post‑mortem examination has been scheduled for the deceased.
The sheriff’s office issued a statement urging boaters to wear personal flotation devices at all times, citing a 2024 Coast Guard report that drowning accounts for 76 percent of all boating fatalities. The report estimates 400 to 500 drowning deaths each year, with approximately 87 percent of those victims not wearing life vests.
