The killing of 45‑year‑old trader Vinod Kumar Sahani in Gonda has sparked heightened political activity around the Nishad community, a key electoral group in eastern and central Uttar Pradesh. The incident, which followed a dispute over Sahani’s social media posts, has drawn the attention of the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Nishad Party and other parties, all of whom are reaching out to the bereaved family amid growing anger.
On Saturday, Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai and more than 60 party workers were detained while attempting to meet Sahani’s family in Reksadiya village. Police stopped Rai’s convoy near the Shahpur toll plaza and brought him to Masoli police station after an argument. Rai staged a dharna at the station, insisting he was only there to visit the family and not to hold a political event. After police assured that action would be taken against the accused within five days, Congress leaders returned.
The detention triggered a broader political exchange. Former minister and SP leader Yogesh Pratap Singh criticized the government, arguing that a minister should raise concerns about police negligence within the administration. CPI(ML) activists visited the village and alleged that the killing was linked to feudal dominance, caste supremacy and political patronage, demanding a probe into all involved.
Police have arrested four suspects: Shubham Singh alias Golu, Subhash Singh, Akash Singh and Varun Singh alias Anshu, who was taken into 14‑day judicial custody. Three police officers, including the Paraspur SHO, were suspended for alleged negligence. The victim’s family had previously protested with his body at Shahpur crossing, demanding accountability from police personnel.
The incident has also sparked debate over Sahani’s political affiliation, with the SP describing him as a party worker, the Nishad Party claiming he was a campaigner, and VIP founder Mukesh Sahani stating he was a VIP associate. Ahead of the assembly elections, parties are intensifying outreach to the Nishad community, while the Nishad Party, an ally of the BJP, has demanded stringent action, including the death penalty for the killers and compensation for the family.
