On September 13, the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, praised the New Delhi Declaration issued by the BRICS group during its 18th summit. He said the document reflected a pragmatic, inclusive and forward‑looking leadership that India brings to the evolving global order.
The declaration, adopted in New Delhi, also welcomed the Guwahati Declaration issued by BRICS heads of anti‑drug agencies. It calls for operational and technical cooperation among member states to combat drug trafficking.
Sarma highlighted the declaration as a testament to India’s chairmanship, noting its substantive content and far‑reaching vision. He cited consensus on multilateral reform, counter‑terrorism, and collaboration in new‑age technology, agriculture and animal conservation, and praised the inclusion of the Global South’s voice.
He welcomed the formal recognition of the Guwahati Declaration in the 45‑page document, describing it as an extremely symbolic move. Assam, situated on a key narcotics corridor, benefits from the emphasis on timely information exchange, intelligence sharing, and the use of innovative digital tools to strengthen law‑enforcement efforts.
