Jaipur, Sep (PTI) – Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said on Wednesday that one in every four bank accounts opened under the Jan Dhan Yojana is inactive, with 5.72 crore accounts holding no money. He cited a right‑to‑information reply on the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana as evidence that the Modi government’s policies are contributing to rising poverty.
Gehlot described the situation as “the real picture behind the Modi government’s claims of ‘poor welfare’.” He argued that the prevalence of empty accounts signals that the government’s policies are widening the gap between the rich and the poor, while the wealthy continue to accumulate wealth.
The former chief minister noted that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly highlighted the growing inequality in the country. He warned that the full impact of discontinuing welfare schemes such as MGNREGA has yet to emerge, and that the situation will worsen when the consequences become apparent.
Gehlot concluded that the rising inequality is a matter of concern and urged the central government to give serious attention to the issue, emphasizing the need to address the widening gap between the rich and the poor.
He stressed that the adverse consequences of cutting welfare schemes for the poor were still unfolding, and that the situation would deteriorate further when those impacts fully materialized.
