A fatal shooting occurred in the car park of a community centre on Rossmore Avenue in Punchbowl, a suburb of Sydney’s south‑west, on Wednesday evening. Emergency services were dispatched after reports of gunfire. A vehicle was seen leaving the scene shortly after the incident.
Paramedics attempted to treat the victim, but he died at the scene. The man’s identity has not yet been released by police.
The incident follows the New South Wales premier, Chris Minns, announcing new legislation aimed at curbing gang‑related violence in Sydney. The measures introduce aggravated offences for conspiracy to commit gang‑related murder, with a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, and provide police with expanded powers such as interim serious crime prevention orders.
The government has denied that criminal gangs are out of control in the city, citing recent mistaken‑identity shootings involving Joshua Macdonald and Marco Tapia, neither of whom had links to organised crime. Police are urging anyone with information about the Punchbowl shooting to contact the Campsie police station or Crime Stoppers.
