Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed that Tehran regards its relationship with India as a long‑standing, historic and civilisational partnership. In a statement released by the Iranian Embassy in India on September 8, 2026, Baghaei referred to the recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, highlighting the importance of their ties.
During the first top‑level meeting between the two countries since the conflict began in Iran this February, Modi urged President Pezeshkian to ensure peace and stability in West Asia and to safeguard freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Baghaei said the discussion would continue at the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit, where both nations would explore areas of mutual interest.
Just days before the summit, Baghaei mentioned that the Chabahar Port would be a key topic in bilateral talks. The port, jointly developed by India and Iran, is seen as vital for enhancing connectivity and trade, and both countries are pushing to incorporate it into the International North‑South Transport Corridor.
India will host the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12‑13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, bringing together leaders from member and partner countries. The summit will provide a platform for further discussions on shared priorities such as regional security and trade infrastructure.
