After ten days of searching, emergency responders in Nepal announced the rescue of a Chinese national and a 64‑year‑old Nepali woman, bringing new hope to families of the thousands still missing following the massive floods that struck the country.
The Nepali military confirmed that a joint team of army personnel and South Korean disaster experts extracted the Chinese man from a 225‑metre tunnel at the Upper Trishuli‑1 hydropower project. He was flown out by helicopter and is now undergoing a health assessment.
Rescue teams have focused on twelve hydropower sites where roughly 900 workers are missing, half of them believed to be trapped in large tunnels. Groups from India, China, South Korea and the United States have combed debris and damaged structures, while two Nepali workers were also saved from a tunnel on the Trishuli River earlier this week.
The Nepali woman was found submerged in mud inside a collapsed house in Nuwakot, the town devastated by the floods. After being pulled from the half‑buried dwelling, she was airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. The floods, triggered by a glacial and rock collapse on 26 August, have killed at least 1,375 people and left more than 5,000 missing, according to the national disaster agency.
