The Kerala Public Works Department (PWD) announced new safety directives for construction sites across the state following a fatal accident in Alappuzha. The incident, which claimed the life of a 66‑year‑old cyclist who fell into an open pit at an under‑construction project, prompted officials to review existing safety protocols.
Works Minister P.K. Basheer said the responsibility for public safety rests with both officials and contractors. He instructed that all excavation sites be equipped with adequate barricades, warning boards and clearly visible safety systems, especially during night hours. The minister emphasized that no negligence would be tolerated and that human life supersedes any development agenda.
The department has issued urgent instructions to inspect ongoing road‑work projects and verify compliance with the reinforced safety standards. Officials are also tasked with reviewing the Alappuzha case to determine whether any lapse occurred in providing required safeguards. Should any breach be identified, strict action will be taken against the responsible contractor or official, without exemption.
Basheer reiterated the government’s commitment to balance rapid infrastructure development with the utmost regard for public safety. He pledged to strengthen existing measures, issue clear guidelines to contractors, and ensure strict compliance at all stages of construction, asserting that “construction in progress” must never endanger lives.
