At least one person was killed and six others injured in a shooting near an apartment building in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon. Police responded to calls in the Loring Park neighborhood, and city officials advised residents to avoid the area. Hospital officials confirmed the victims’ numbers but did not release identities.
Witness Anthony Strong told The Minnesota Star Tribune that he was smoking behind the building when he heard a rapid series of gunshots, describing the sound as “pop‑pop‑pop‑pop and a bunch more after that.” He fled upstairs after the shots rang out. Two Minneapolis police officers were also hit, one in the leg and another in the stomach; their current conditions have not been disclosed.
Governor Tim Walz said his public‑safety team was on the ground to support local law enforcement and thanked officers for protecting the community. He posted on X that Minnesota was praying for first responders. Special agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the response, and FBI Director Kash Patel indicated the bureau was aware of the incident and would provide resources as needed. Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth expressed prayers for the victims and gratitude for the law‑enforcement response.
Authorities have not released any information about a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing. The story is still developing as officials continue to gather evidence and assess the situation.
