Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, Pinarayi Vijayan, addressed a CPI(M) rally in Taliparamba on August 31, 2026, after the party’s defeat in the constituency. He blamed former CPI(M) leader and independent MLA T.K. Govindan for betraying the party by contesting the seat as an independent, a move he said diverted votes from the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Vijayan noted that the LDF’s vote share fell by more than 11% compared to the 2021 election, a decline he linked directly to Govindan’s candidacy.
Govindan had left the CPI(M) following disagreements over the party’s decision to field M.V. Govindan’s wife, P.K. Shyamala, as its candidate. Supported by the United Democratic Front (UDF), he won the Taliparamba seat, traditionally a CPI(M) stronghold. Vijayan described the loss as a consequence of supporters shifting away from the LDF after Govindan entered the race and urged party members to reflect on the mistake.
In response, Govindan accused the CPI(M) leadership of prioritising personal interests over the party’s welfare, claiming that internal “spin‑off deals” were harming the organization. He questioned whether the leadership was objectively assessing the reasons for the party’s decline and suggested that attacks on party figures, including himself and Payyannur MLA V. Kunhikrishnan, would not resolve the issues.
Govindan also referenced the 2012 killing of Revolutionary Marxist Party leader T.P. Chandrasekharan, alleging that the incident, attributed to CPI(M) activists, had not strengthened the party. His remarks highlighted ongoing internal tensions as the CPI(M) grapples with electoral setbacks and calls for introspection.
