The Kerala Police have begun compiling a database of fugitives and alleged drug suppliers operating from abroad, Inspector General Putta Vimaladitya said on Monday. The effort forms part of the state’s anti‑narcotics campaign, Operation Toofan, and aims to dismantle narcotics networks that extend beyond India’s borders.

According to the IG, police teams are coordinating with central investigating agencies to trace and repatriate individuals wanted in various drug‑trafficking cases. Investigators are also scrutinising suspected international supply chains, with Afghanistan, Oman and Thailand among the countries whose links are being verified.

Vimaladitya reported that the operation has so far generated 165 cases involving commercial quantities of narcotic substances and 395 cases involving intermediate quantities. Nearly 10,100 persons have been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The police have also initiated preventive proceedings under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT‑NDPS) Act, focusing on identifying those behind the supply chain rather than only those caught with drugs. Investigations into 32 cases have led to alleged key players such as financiers and carriers, with arrests made beyond the point of detection.

The IG highlighted strong public support, noting more than 10,000 calls received with information on suspected drug activity. He said the inputs are being examined and acted upon where required. Looking ahead, the police plan to launch counselling and rehabilitation initiatives next month and to organise additional public and sports events, including marathons, to sustain awareness.
