Minister announces welfare measures for drivers, gig and construction workers

The Tamil Nadu government announced a 50 percent subsidy, capped at Rs 75,000, for up to 1,000 workers to purchase new electric auto‑rickshaws, and a similar 50 percent subsidy, capped at Rs 30,000, for up to 1,000 workers to convert existing autos to CNG. The measures apply to individuals registered with the Tamil Nadu Unorganised Drivers and Automobile Workshop Workers Welfare Board, and were disclosed by Labour Welfare and Skill Development Minister J. Mohamed Farvas during a Assembly session.

In the same grant‑demand presentation, Minister Farvas unveiled an accidental insurance scheme worth Rs 10 lakh for gig workers who are registered with the state’s platform‑based gig‑workers welfare board. The insurance is intended to provide financial protection for workers engaged in short‑term or contract‑based assignments.

The government will also set up Construction Skill Centres of Excellence within five government Industrial Training Institutes at an estimated cost of Rs 76.46 crore. These centres will deliver training in modern construction technologies to workers registered with the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board. Additionally, “Transit Accommodation Centres” will be built in Chennai and Coimbatore, costing Rs 14 crore, to offer basic, safe lodging for construction labourers migrating to metropolitan areas for work.

A new initiative called “Ayalagam Sellum Tamil Nadu Kattumana Vettri Karangal” will provide international‑standard skill training and foreign‑language instruction to 1,000 registered construction workers, aiming to improve overseas employment prospects. The scheme is budgeted at Rs 15.06 crore.
