US pollen surge forecast this fall

Seasonal allergy sufferers across the United States are bracing themselves for a surge in pollen levels this fall, thanks to increasingly warm and wet weather. According to AccuWeather’s latest report, more than two dozen eastern and midwestern states are projected to be the hardest hit, with the highest amounts of weed and grass pollen expected in late summer and early fall.

For grass pollen, the worst of it typically subsides in August and early September, but this year’s ample moisture and warm overnight temperatures are expected to keep levels high in parts of the East. Cities like Detroit, Michigan, Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and New York City are predicted to see the highest grass pollen levels.

Weed pollen, on the other hand, is expected to linger into October, with rain tied to this year’s El Niño climate pattern contributing to higher levels across the Southeast and southern Rockies. Cities with some of the worst levels include Raleigh, Nashville, Atlanta, Little Rock, Denver, Salt Lake City, and Albuquerque.

Ragweed is the primary culprit behind fall allergies, with a single plant capable of releasing up to a billion grains of pollen. This pollen can travel hundreds of miles, exacerbating respiratory symptoms for people with asthma and lung conditions. Climate change is also playing a role, pushing the first frost of the fall later in the year and allowing plants to bloom earlier and produce more pollen.

To reduce exposure, people can take steps such as using eye drops, nose sprays, and decongestants to alleviate symptoms. Frequently changing clothing, staying indoors, especially in the morning when ragweed pollen is at its highest, and considering allergy vaccines as a last resort can also help.
